Will the Genesis Brand Be the New Lexus?

I think there’s an argument to be made, at least. In both cases an Asian manufacturer that has been gaining credibility decides to spin off their luxury cars into another brand and gives buyers an incredible value and understated luxury. What do you think? Personally, I love a lot of the stuff HKG (Hyundai/Kia/Genesis) have been doing lately, and I think that the new G90 looks great. And though it’s not technically a Genesis brand product, a first- GEN (*wink*) V8 R-spec is near the top of the running for the car I get when I go to college, provided I can find one cheap enough, which shouldn’t be a problem, because “it’s a nice car, but it’s a Hyundai .”

I’m actually pretty excited to see how the Kia Stinger/GT/whateveritendsupbeingcalled turns out. TTV6 engine option, RWD with a possible AWD option, and it’s even got something of a sloped roofline like the A7 does - at least from what I can tell under that test cladding.

Looks good from what little one can see, in my opinion.

the reason lexus was so successful in the early 90's is because of the super reliability

hyundai has alot of catch up to do

My dad drives a Kia Cadenza, and my mom drives a Hyundai Santa Fe, and they’ve both been extremely reliable. They have come a very long way.

They definitely have a chance, and it does hurt one bit to have more V8, RWD cars around.

Will they be sold as a loss leader like the early years of the LS? Lexus was able to market that car as an updated reverse engineered W126 2/3 the price, maybe Hyundai can pull it off.

Nice to see they are FINALLY giving it a distinct brand, as many of us said they should have 7-8 years ago.

But Hyundai reliability is what? Less than 10 years old? Lexus has been the reliable lux maker since the first attempt.

does not you mean? And yes, I’m really happy that they’ve become competitive.

FWIW Hyundai has been reliable since the first attempt at luxury cars. Right?

I honestly don’t look into the first gen Equus reliability numbers. I’m saying just like Cadillac has a lot of shitty history to overcome so does Hyundai/Kia. For years they made cars that were held together with spit and popsicle sticks. Even though some people will chime in and say their 1997 kia was the most reliable car they’ve ever owned in history, I would still consider that to be the outlier.

And some people just downright don’t believe that Hyundai/Kia has ever made shitty quality cars in their history.

Absolutely they have, but not anymore. The standalone brand should help Geneses overcome that reputation, at least for those not versed in the brand’s history.

I want Hyundai to succeed, the more pressure they put on other automakers the better the competition for the rest of us.

I think Hyundai has been super reliable since at least the late ‘90s. That’s when they started offering their 10 year 100k mile warranty. Way before any of the other guys.

Just an anecdote. I bought a ‘99 Elantra and had it until 2 years ago (totaled in an accident). I never had to use the warranty. Except for the clutch (my fault), nothing ever broke on that thing. Not even any of the electrical components.

They tried this back in 09, and were off to a great start. They had the Genesis sedan and coupe which shared nothing in common, but the both looked good. The coupe looked like from the front a Lexus IS and the back looked like an Infinity G35/7. Fast forward a few years they release the Velociraptor, and update the coupe’s front end to look like it. Their entry level car. Why in the hell would you make your “sports car” look like an entry level car.

Not just that - it was the exceptional customer service that Lexus offered to LS customers that won them over because it gave them a level of stress free servicing and maintenance nobody had ever seen before.

They can be if they up the quality of their customer service. The HKG trio are finally shaking off their old image and introducing customers to a new breed of quality and comfort, but apart from that, the other big quality Lexus had when they started out was their exceptional customer service and efficiency at dealing with issues. Lexus LS customers were given a level of service unrivalled amongst any other mainstream manufacturer e.g. when your Lexus needed a service, someone would come and pick it up for you, conduct said service and bring it back with a complimentary wash and wax and maybe even a full tank. Interestingly, the LS didn’t have an easy start in America because within the first few months of being on sale, it developed a problem with the electronic adjuster for the steering column. But it was also the perfect opportunity for the excellent customer service to kick in and the recalls were conducted quickly and efficiently without any hassle on the behalf of the customer. From then on it was pretty much plain sailing. HKG has already got some of that with their 5/7/10 year warranties, but they’ll really need to amp it up if they want to make it.

Speaking from experience, HKG customer service has a long way to go, at least at the dealers in Memphis.

Well, it’s an affordable, luxurious sedan with a 400+ hp NA V8, so how hard can it be to be great?
